3 reasons to give up milk and other dairy products for good

Dairy products have been linked to arthritis, kidney stones, allergies, nasal congestion, respiratory problems, childhood diabetes, heart disease, mad cow disease, canker sores, mood swings, and depression.

Cow’s milk is designed to turn a 50-pound baby calf into a 300-pound young cow, and that’s it! If that’s not the plan for you and your family, don’t drink it!

Bovine growth hormone is commonly found in cow’s milk. It’s an unnatural substance that poses health risks for humans.

Let the calves drink cow’s milk. You were weaned from mother’s milk long ago (well… that’s the norm). Drink water.

Making mornings easier

In most households, mornings are hectic. Everyone is going in a different direction and has different needs. Take care of some of the chaos by doing things the night before.

Check your calendar for tomorrow’s events, and choose what you’ll wear and what you’ll need for the day. This goes for the kids, too. If your clothes aren’t clean or pressed, you have time to take care of it. Lay out your clothes.

Pack for the day. And do it the night before. Backpacks, library books, instruments, sports gear, permission slips, homework. What do the kids need? Now you – briefcase, tote bag, gym bag (yes, you!), and whatever you need for your errands.

For lunches, put together as much as you can while you’re preparing or cleaning up dinner.

Make time for breakfast – the most important meal of the day. Crockpot oatmeal, French toast/waffles/pancakes made ahead and frozen, or smoothies are all easy and quick.

Take 5!

Exercise breaks, that is.

Incorporate five 5-10 minute exercise breaks in your day. Need ideas?

  • Skip the elevator and take the stairs.
  • Walk around the block when you get the mail.
  • Stretch your neck – look up/down, look left/right, ear to shoulder.
  • Shoulder rolls, forward and back.
  • Squeeze your bum and hold for 10 seconds. Release for 5 seconds. Repeat for 5 minutes.
  • Kegels for the women.
  • Point and flex your feet, then circle your feet in each direction.
  • Squats or calf raises when you’re filing or at the copier.
  • Crunch your abs.

If I had a million dollars…

I’d still have to exercise.

Get up and move – hop, or do jumping jacks, or boogie with your baby. Get your blood flowing! And don’t take any of their menu suggestions (you know better).

Portion control

In this age of super-sizing, we don’t even know what a portion is anymore. This week, make an effort to get your portions under control. Remember that a meal fits on a 9″ plate.

Take this quiz to test your portion size knowledge. The quiz includes information that’s not aligned with the Total Health Makeover®, but it has value in teaching portion size. Just remember – THM® avoids red meat and dairy, and recommends more veggie servings each day!

*Budget tip – smaller portions equal cost savings!

Remembering George and Abe

What can you do today to remember George and Abe on their birthday-celebration day?

For George –

  • Brush your teeth. Avoid, or at least put off, wearing dentures.
  • Tell the truth. Be a person of integrity.
  • Wear something cherry red. Skip the pie.

For Abe –

  • Schedule an eye exam. And don’t read by candlelight.
  • Read a book. Choose one a topic you don’t know much about.
  • Stand tall. Good posture looks good on everyone.

Pay it forward

Coach Mary Beth had a beautiful message for our THM® on a Budget class today.

During this class we’ve been talking about money. I’ve heard it said that if you have enough to meet your needs and a little something left to share that you are among the word’s wealthiest. I know that we encompass many income levels but I’m sure that we all fit in this category. Even if it’s just a dollar to push into a tip jar when you pick up the morning paper I hope that you will consider paying it forward, and count yourself lucky to be able to do so.

The class continues through Friday, February 20th. Join now, and you’ll have access to all the class resources and tips.

Spirit Sunday

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Marilu.com has a “Spirit Sunday” tradition. Take some time today to rest, to relax, to breathe. Enjoy a moment in nature, or a nap, or a yoga meditation, or a prayer. Just take a little time out.

Celebrate love

I always find it odd that we set aside only one day a year for love. Most of us are conceived in love, sense it immediately upon arrival, and, with our first crush, have experienced almost every aspect of love there is…. I guess we’d go crazy if we celebrated love more than one day a year, so let’s make sure that day is worth it.
