The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach – waiting for a gift from the sea.

No sugar today (naturally occurring sugars in fruit are good). A little pure maple syrup or agave on oatmeal is okay – but just a little.
Clean out your fridge. Keep anything that looks great, but toss everything questionable. Wipe down the shelves, and wipe out the drawers.
Now that you know what’s in the fridge, plan 5 servings of fruit/veggies for today. A serving is 1/2 cup (except salad greens – that’s 2 cups for a serving). You can do this.
Do you know what your kids are being served in the school cafeteria? Sure, you read the menu on the school website, but do you know what’s really on the tray?
Visit the school at noon. Check it out. If you don’t like what you see then start packing your child’s lunch. Get your child involved, too.
Children who eat nutritious lunches tend to concentrate better in school. Children who fill up on sugary snacks or skip lunch altogether tend to become restless or lose focus. Teachers report that students who maintain a steady blood sugar level throughout the day tend to do better in school.
Children who eat healthfully at lunchtime and throughout the day tend to have better overall health. They tend to be sick less often and when they are sick they recover more quickly. Taking the time to pack a wholesome lunch may take a few extra moments in the morning (or the night before), but it might mean less time spent visiting the doctor’s office.
Children need nutritious food to grow. Lunch may be just one meal of the day, but your child may be consuming 1/3 of the day’s calories at this time. Packing a nutritious lunch will also ensure that they’re also receiving 1/3 of the day’s nutrients. Pack “growing foods” like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and plant-based sources of protein.
Children who eat a nutritious lunch are less likely to become obese. Obese children are at higher risk of chronic health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Children who eat well tend to maintain a healthy body weight and body image. Children who have a healthy relationship with nourishing food are less likely to use food as a coping or control mechanism, resulting in a lower risk of landing an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia.
Hop on your bicycle and ride on nicely groomed bike trails through scenic areas. Search the internet for bike trails near you. Pack a picnic lunch in a backpack, and make a day of it.
Biking is a perfect Labor Day weekend activity, and it’s fun for everyone. Get the whole family involved. Not a lot of family? Invite the whole neighborhood!
Back to School means Back to Health at Marilu.com!
Get on board this month and you’ll love the results…
It all starts with a LIVE CHAT with Marilu Henner tonight!
With all the emphasis on Booty School today, you might think this is exactly the wrong time to offer a dessert recipe.
Here’s the thing – we have a holiday weekend just ahead. You want to give your family something that feels like a holiday treat, an end-of-summer special. You also want to limit the junk-food factor, and offer something healthy-er.
So we bring you a Total Health Makeover® dessert. Not something you need to have around every day – just something to make a holiday weekend feel like a celebration.
Ice “Cream” Sandwiches Yellow * Makes about 24
2-1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup Earth Balance margarine
1-1/2 cups Sucanat®
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs worth of Ener-G egg replacer, prepared as directed
1 package Tropical Source chocolate chips
1 quart (or 2 pints) vanilla non-dairy frozen dessert *see notes below
Preheat oven to 375F.
Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl. In a separate bowl, beat the margarine, Sucanat®, and vanilla until creamy. Add “egg” mixture half at a time, beating until well mixed. Beat in the flour mixture. Sitr in chips.
Drop by heaping Tablespoons onto a cookie sheet and bake 8-10 minutes. Remove cookies to a wire rack to cool completely before filling.
Place one ice cream scoop of slightly softened dairy-free ice cream (vanilla, chocolate, or mint all work well) on flat side of cookie. Gently press a second cookie on top until the ice cream smooths between the two. Lay flat in a container with waxed paper between the layers and freeze until ready to use.
*There are some really delicious non-dairy frozen desserts – here are some favorites, most of which come in vanilla, various forms of chocolate, and sometimes coconut.

Health care was debated heatedly across the United States in August. But at PCRM’s celebrity-hosted “town hall” for healthy school lunches, the only raised voices were cheering suggestions for vegetarian lunches. And on PCRM ads in Washington, D.C., a smiling 8-year-old girl asked a polite question of the current administration: “President Obama’s daughters get healthy school lunches. Why don’t I?”
As Congress prepares to take up the Child Nutrition Act (CNA), which regulates the National School Lunch Program, the ad campaign draws a sharp contrast between the healthy meals served at many private schools and the high-fat foods served at schools that rely on government subsidies.

On Aug. 22, Marilu Henner, mother, best-selling author, and star of Taxi, hosted the School Lunch Sound Off. The open-mike event sponsored by PCRM offered students, parents, and other community members a chance to share concerns about the National School Lunch Program and ideas for improving school food. Students who attended the event were asked to bring drawings, comics, skits, and songs to share about school lunch.
