Green power

Greens provide the best source of the alkaline minerals:

Greens are loaded with vitamins!

  • Greens contain more beta-carotene than carrots*
  • Greens contain more vitamin C then oranges*
  • Greens contain more Vitamin E than whole grain wheat*
  • Greens contain more vitamin B2 (riboflavin) than dairy milk*
  • Greens contain a complete amino acid profile (protein) (long article but has good info about vegan protein; cites spinach as a complete protein along with soybeans and quinoa)

Add greens to your menus!

* The website in the links includes all kinds of processed foods in their lists. You know the difference between real food, processed food, and fortified food – so read the lists with that knowledge. If you click on any of the foods listed you can see a complete nutrition profile for that food. It’s pretty cool.

Get up and dance!

This is a familiar “get up off the couch and move your body” song. So…

GET UP OFF THE COUCH AND MOVE YOUR BODY!

You don’t have to join a gym or spend a lot of money to get in shape. You just have to keep moving. Don’t get caught in the rut of sitting around or looking for the smallest amount of actual work possible. As Marilu has pointed out, animals in the wild don’t get fat because they can’t be lazy. They’re always moving. You can be lean and lithe, too – as long as you’re willing to move for it.

You’ve heard this all before *

  • Park as far away as possible and enjoy the walk to your destination.
  • Park once and walk your errands.
  • Use the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Treat every escalator like stairs, and climb it instead of standing there.
  • Treat every people-mover/moving sidewalk like a regular sidewalk, and keep walking (it’s kinda fun!).
  • Get up during every commercial break and do something – fold laundry, load the dishwasher, take out the garbage, let the dog out, make tomorrow’s lunches, dust a room, iron a blouse.
  • Rethink rewards – a walk around the block is a great reward when you’ve had a busy day, or a bad one.
  • Finally – don’t take yourself too seriously. Get up and dance like the crazy, fun person you are!

Featured recipe from Marilu’s table * Raspberry salsa

Try this spicy salsa with chicken or fish. It would also be good with marinated tofu (try a citrus-based marinade).

Raspberry Salsa
Yellow * Makes 2 cups

2 cups raspberries
1/4 cup finely chopped sweet onion
3 teaspoons chopped jalapeno pepper
1 clove garlic, chopped
1/4 cup cilantro (or mint)
1/2 teaspoon agave nectar
3 Tablespoons lime juice

Stir all ingredients in bowl and refrigerate 2 hours before serving.

BOOTY Camp bonus * Skin brushing

Dry skin brushing is an excellent detoxifier and exfoliator. When you’re doing a program like Booty Camp that increases your detox process, skin brushing will boost your results – it stimulates your lymph system (great for detox), and it makes your skin soft (great for summer). Skin brushing’s “partner” in both of these effects is drinking plenty of water. Drink half your weight in ounces each day, up to 100 ounces, throughout the day.

Brush your dry skin in an elongated motion toward your heart for 1-2 minutes every morning – before you shower or exercise. Use a natural bristle brush designed for dry skin brushing – Marilu’s favorite is the Yerba Prima Tampico Skin Brush (it has a removable handle and perfect bristles).

Start with your feet and ankles, and work your way up the body to your calves and thighs. Really concentrate on brushing the lymphatic areas of your body (the backs of your knees, your inner thighs, under your arms, and inside your elbows) to stimulate those glands and get them started on flushing toxins.

Gently brush up your stomach and tush, shoulders and back. Last, do your hands and move up your arms. Make sure you cover the entire surface of your body, excluding your breasts and face.

The brushing should not irritate you, but it will feel rough (so be gentle to start!). It may take a couple of days to get used to it, but if you hang in there, you will feel the difference in your skin in less than a week.

Spirit Sunday * All this beauty

In our fast-paced world, we don’t always take time to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

Find ways to bring beauty into your daily life. Put a vase of flowers by your kitchen sink or in the bathroom (you know, where you’ll spend time… what good do they do in the formal dining room?). Frame and hang a photo or print you love. Use your favorite fragrance; don’t save it for “good.” Garnish your plates at mealtime – a slice of citrus fruit, a sprig of herb, a sprinkle of sliced almonds or sunflower seeds. Light candles for dinner (even pizza). Smile.

*pssst – Share the song with your mom and other special women in your life. They bring beauty to the world, too!

Countdown!

We’re starting Day 3 of Countdown in BOOTY Camp – there’s still time to join the fun and get results in the month of May.

What is Countdown? It’s a preparation period. A way to clean out your body from the worst dietary offenders. A way to transition to eating healthier. Join us now and don’t miss another day.

The 4-day Countdown to our Booty Camp consists of eliminating the Four NO’s from your diet. The Four NO’s are: NO dairy, NO red meat, NO alcohol and NO sugar. Adhering to the four NO’s for these four days will start you on your way to preparing your palate and body for upcoming days at Booty Camp. Please feel free to jump in, ask questions, and follow along here (members) or here (everybody’s welcome).

Dairy is found in foods like milk, cheese, ice cream, cream cheese, butter, and yogurt. Dairy can also be hidden in foods like bread, English muffins and other bread products, and pre-packaged foods. Soy/rice/almond milk, non-dairy ice creams, soy yogurts and rice/soy cheeses are good alternatives. But, it is best to avoid it all during these four days.

Sugar comes in many forms. A few of the sugars to avoid are refined white sugar, brown sugar, glucose, corn syrup, and maltose. Chemical sweeteners like NutraSweet and Splenda are out as well. Some good substitutes are honey, Sucanat, agave, blackstrap molasses, maple sugar, maple syrup, brown rice syrup and Stevia. But, again, it is best to avoid these substitutes during the four-day countdown. (A note about fruit: Fruit has naturally-occurring sugars. It is recommended to eat fruit during these four days).

Avoid red meat such as beef, pork, venison, lamb, buffalo meat, etc. Instead, try organic, cage-free poultry, fish, tofu, tempeh, quinoa or other grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.

Alcohol should be avoided during these four days as we work to clean our systems and palates. Jill’s favorite alternative to alcohol is sparkling water over ice with fresh squeezed lemon and lime. Other options to consider are flavored seltzers, club soda, fruit juice and herbal tea.

We are glad you are joining us for these four days and look forward to seeing YOU in Booty Camp!
