Changing Normal - How I Helped my Husband Beat Cancer

New York Times bestselling author, memory expert, radio host, and beloved actor Marilu Henner delivers an intimate account of how she and her husband stood together in the face of cancer and triumphed—without chemotherapy or radiation.

Marilu Henner was moving on with her life after a divorce when her old college classmate Michael Brown, whom she had not seen in over twenty years, called her out of nowhere. Within days of their first meeting in 2003, they were planning a life together, and soon they were inseparable as Michael became ever more integrated into Marilu’s family. But after only months they were thrown the ultimate curveball: Michael was diagnosed with bladder cancer, and then lung cancer.

Marilu refused to lose the love of her life so easily. With the knowledge she had gained on her own health journey, chronicled in several of her bestselling books, Marilu set about finding a path for Michael that would use the best of Eastern and Western medicine to beat his cancers and return Michael to optimal health. Michael eschewed traditional treatments and with Marilu’s help, aided by knowledgeable and sympathetic doctors, he forged his own path.

In this moving and informative book, Marilu tells the story of their fast-paced romance and how this contrasted with the day-to-day battle for Michael’s life. Michael tells the story from his point of view: the search for the cause of his cancer, the mental anguish he felt as he realized how responsible he was for his condition, the physical and mental hardships that he had to overcome, and the triumph of love that made it all worthwhile.

Not a “how-to” book in the traditional sense, Changing Normal is a book of empowerment, a call for all those facing similar challenges to take responsibility for their lives, to search for the causes of their illness and address them directly. Written with an engaging voice, a sense of humor, and life-changing wisdom, Changing Normal is a personal and touching look at how Marilu and Michael faced down a cancer diagnosis and came out the other side happier, healthier, and more in love than ever.

The Marilu Henner Show – Tuesday July 29th, 2014

steveanddog9:39AM PST – Steve Carbone, infamous blogger and owner of www.RealitySteve.com

In 2003, Carbone was working for his father selling linens wholesale when he decided to recap The Bachelor as a hobby. Within a few years, Carbone gained a moderate following on the blog he called Reality Steve.

In 2009, shortly before the show’s 13th season, Carbone received unsolicited intel about a twist-ending. A source claimed that after taping ended, bachelor Jason Mesnick ditched the woman he chose for the runner-up. Carbone posted the salacious report and faced widespread disbelief until Mesnick appeared on the show’s “After the Final Rose” special with his affianced runner-up.

After his inaugural spoiler made a splash, Carbone started to collect sources and perform his own sleuthing. Within a few seasons, despite a few hiccups, Carbone devised a functioning spoiling system.

www,brycepinkham.com

Monty Navarro (Pinkham) has just received some really great news from his late mother’s lifelong friend Miss Shingle (Carr). He’s a long-lost member of a noble family and could become the next Earl of Highhurst! There are only eight minor issues, namely the other relatives who precede him in line for the title. So Monty does what any ambitious, highborn gentleman would do: he sets out to eliminate them one by one, all while juggling his mistress (O’Hare) (she’s after more than just love), his fiancée (Worsham) (she’s his cousin, but who’s keeping track?), plus the constant threat of landing behind bars! But it will all be worth it if he can slay his way into Highhurst Castle…and be done in time for tea. Each of the eight heirs perilously standing in the way of Monty’s fortune are played by Jefferson Mays in a performance the New York Times calls “brilliant” and says “deserves to be immortalized in Broadway lore.” The design team for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder includes Alexander Dodge (Scenic Design), Linda Cho (Costume Design), Philip S. Rosenberg (Lighting Design), Dan Moses Schreier (Sound Design), Aaron Rhyne (Projections Design), and Charles LaPointe (Wig Design). Orchestrations are by Jonathan Tunick and Vocal Arrangements are by Dianne Adams McDowell and Steven Lutvak. Paul Staroba serves as Music Director.

10:08AM PST – Steve Kayser, Media Expert and Author of the Book, “The Greatest Words You’ve Never Heard” is here with us to share tips for Boomers in the workplace

Re: Are Baby Boomers Doomed To Irrelevance In The Workplace?

www.stevekayser.com

Many older Americans may have little choice but to adapt their mindset and survive longer in their careers if they want to maintain something resembling their current lifestyle during retirement.

Kayser lists a few trends that may incentivize an aging workforce to work longer:

  • The number of Americans 55 and older will almost double between now and 2030 – from 60 million today to 107.6 million.
  • American life expectancy is at an all-time high, and death rates are at an all-time low.
  •  The global economic crisis has wiped out or severely affected millions of middle- and senior-aged people’s life savings. Working long after the traditional retirement age may be necessary.

But with an increasingly competitive pool of professionals whose skill sets need to be regularly updated, how can boomers stay in the game?

Kayser quotes Alvin Toffler: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.”

He discusses his method for how older workers can maintain their value – by staying “R-E-L-E-V-A-N-T.”

Steve Kayser is an award-winning writer, editor, publisher, former radio host and founder of Kayser Media. He has had the great fortune to interview and collaborate with some of the best minds in the business world, and his eclectic approach to public relations and marketing has been widely documented. He recently published “The Greatest Words You’ve Never Heard.”

11:08AM PST – Dr. Lisa Bobby is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Psychotherapist, and a Board Certified Life Coach. She is a contributing expert to EXaholics.com and offers advice on the website www.exaholics.com to “EXaholics”

What is an EXaholic

Are you an EXaholic? If you’re asking yourself that question, then chances are you’ve come to the right place. Are you having a difficult time moving on? Have thoughts of your ex been an obstacle to your growth? There are varying degrees of exaholism. For some of us, pain is the predominant feeling at the moment. We’re not able to concentrate too well, and we may be depressed. Some of us just don’t know where to begin. We’ve spent a great deal of time and energy on our ex, and find it hard to re-establish control over our own lives. We feel alone. Some of us are single, some are divorcees, and some may be divorcees with children. If only there was a pill we could take that would solve all of our problems right away.

Well, until that pill is available, it’s going to take hard work. It won’t be easy. And for many of us it will hurt. Emotional pain can be far more difficult to heal than physical pain.

While Exaholics does not itself offer therapy or advice, experts on the site will share their own thoughts on the subject. These experts speak for themselves and it is of course your decision to incorporate an experts’ advice into your life.

Much like Twelve step programs for alcoholics, this is the first one for Exaholics. While this program of recovery is non-professional and does not seek the endorsement of credentialed therapists or physicians, we believe in its success, just like we see in other non-professional 12 step programs. The program offers hope and a new suggested way of thinking and living for countless exaholics. Work the steps and share your thoughts about the steps in the 12 Steps Forum. Interact with others in the program who are on the same step. And talk about your progress in places like the Forums and LIVE CHAT.

Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby is a personal growth and relationship expert. She is a warm and compassionate therapist and coach, with years of experience in walking with people on their journey out of darkness and pain, and into the light of healing and personal transformation. She works to transform sadness into growth, bring healing from loss, create healthy relationships in the future, and help people become a stronger, wiser, happier in the process. She is the Clinical Director of Growing Self Counseling & Life Coaching in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Bobby has both a Master’s Degree and a Doctorate

Doctors and Celebrities Guide 21-Day Vegan Kickstart

Neal Barnard, M.D., Leads Online Nutrition Program; Consumers Get Meal Plan, Recipes, Expert Advice

Millions of people will start diets on New Year’s Day, but many of those weight-loss plans won’t be healthy or sustainable. That’s why doctors and dietitians with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine are teaming up with wellness coach and best-selling author Marilu Henner, actress Alicia Silverstone, exercise physiologist Marco Borges, and NBA champion John Salley to guide the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart.

The online program—going live the first day of every month at www.21DayKickstart.org—provides all the support dieters need to test-drive a healthful plant-based diet. There is no cost to join. The program launched Jan. 1, 2010 and has guided more than 350,000 Kickstarters.

“Losing weight has never been easier,” says PCRM dietitian Susan Levin, M.S., R.D. “There is no need to count calories on a low-fat, plant-based diet. Kickstarters can lose about a pound a week and many experience significant health benefits, including lower cholesterol and increased energy. This is a great program for anyone that wants to lose weight and maximize their health.”

Kickstarters receive daily e-mails with recipes and cooking tips, a 21-day meal plan, an interactive vegan restaurant guide, and a free iPhone application. They’ll also get access to online videos and discussion boards featuring registered dietitians and physicians such as Neal Barnard, M.D., Dean Ornish, M.D., and John McDougall, M.D.

Celebrity diet counselors, including cancer survivor Kris Carr, wellness coaches Kathy Freston and Victoria Moran, Ironman Brendan Brazier, ultramarathon runner Scott Jurek, and vegan firefighter Rip Esselstyn will offer advice on food choices and grocery shopping. They will also share personal stories about the challenges and benefits of new eating habits.

Adopting a vegan diet is surprisingly easy, according to a recent study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. Study participants lost weight, lowered their blood sugar, and reduced their need for medications used to treat diabetes and other health conditions. Other studies have found that vegan diets can lead to significant weight loss sustained over several years. Plant-based diets also reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

International Conference on Diabetes Provides Dietary Recommendations for Type 2 Diabetes

Clinicians Discuss Future of Global Health Care; Diet as a First-Line Diabetes Treatment

WASHINGTON—New dietary guidelines for diabetes management, released at the International Conference on Diabetes (ICD), hosted by the George Washington University School of Medicine and the nonprofit Physicians Committee, favor low-fat, low-glycemic, plant-based foods, curbing sodium intake to 1,500 milligrams each day, and taking a vitamin B12 supplement.

A panel of 35 international researchers, representing Harvard Medical School, the Harvard School of Public Health, Kaiser Permanente, University of Bern, University of Bristol, the German Diabetes Center, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, discussed the latest science in insulin resistance, genetic risk factors for diabetes, and lifestyle interventions, driving the message home about diet as a first-line treatment, instead of a complementary approach, to diabetes management.

“The Institute of Medicine shows it takes 17 years for the latest research to make its way into clinical practice,” says guidelines author Neal Barnard, M.D., president of the Physicians Committee and an associate professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. “If you have enough research that shows a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and beans will significantly reduce the risk of chronic disease, why wait?”

Dr. Barnard’s sentiments were echoed throughout the conference from panelists who shared success stories about defeating diabetes in the Marshall Islands, Navajo Nation, and Southern diabetes hot spots Atlanta and Houston with grocery store tours, plant-based cooking classes, one-on-one nutrition counseling, and promotion of regional plant-based foods.

Caroline Trapp, N.P., C.D.E., and Dr. Barnard discussed medical coding, billing, and effective intervention strategies, including regular check-ins, turning your waiting room into an after-hours classroom, being accessible to patients at all times, and getting the whole family involved.

David Jenkins, M.D., Ph.D., a professor at the University of Toronto and creator of the glycemic index, offered tips for applying the glycemic index in clinical practice and shed light on dietary staples that kept the Okinawans trim and healthy: fruits, vegetables, tofu, and seaweed.

Mikael Knip, M.D., Ph.D., from the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Central Hospital, discussed dietary risk factors and prenatal considerations for type 1 diabetes, while Jeffrey Mechanick, M.D., E.C.N.U., president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, challenged 400 conference participants to work together to break down environmental silos that perpetuate chronic disease.

Physicians, nurses, and dietitians who attended earned 13 continuing medical education (CME) credits and enjoyed nutrient-dense meals: steel cut oatmeal with fresh fruit for breakfast; leafy green salads with lentils, cauliflower risotto, and grilled pineapple for lunch; and quinoa cookies with mint-infused water for dessert.

Before Saturday’s session, conference attendees participated in Lani Muelrath’s Fit Quickies exercise demonstration, walking away with multiple sets of easy-to-perform, five-minute exercises for patients.

Frank Hu, M.D., Ph.D., from the Harvard School of Public Health emphasized the importance of dietary interventions in a clinical setting and on a global level, mentioning that, “Genes load the gun, but environment pulls the trigger.”

CME videos of the conference’s presentations will be available on the Physicians Committee’s NutritionCME.org website later this summer. A list of ICD panelists and poster presentations is available at www.DiabetesConference2014.org.

The new dietary guidelines were presented by Dr. Barnard and Ms. Trapp as a first step in providing stronger, evidence-based guidance for clinicians and patients.

The Marilu Henner Show – Wednesday July 23rd, 2014

9:39AM PST – Zelda la Grange, Author of “Good Morning, Mr. Mandela: A Memoir”

Good Morning, Mr. Mandela tells the extraordinary story of how a young woman’s life, beliefs, and prejudices were utterly transformed by the man she had been taught was the enemy. It is an incredible journey of an awkward, terrified young secretary in her twenties who rose from a job in the government typing pool to become one of the President’s most loyal and devoted associates. For 20 years of service, la Grange supported Mandela in dealing with political tension, personal tragedies, and the many complications of worldwide fame. She remained loyal to him to the very end of his life, despite outside attempts to ostracize her.

Why: Good Morning, Mr. Mandela offers a rare intimate portrait of Nelson Mandela and his remarkable life as well as moving proof of the power we all have to change.  A white Afrikaner, Zelda la Grange grew up in segregated South Africa, supporting the regime and the rules of Apartheid. Her conservative family referred to the imprisoned Nelson Mandela as “a terrorist.” Yet just a few years after his release and the end of Apartheid, she would be traveling the world by Mr. Mandela’s side, having grown to respect and cherish the man she would come to call ‘Khulu,’ or ‘grandfather.’

Zelda la Grange was born in 1970 in Boksburg, South Africa, and began working as a secretary for the South African government in 1992. She joined the Office of the President in 1994 and in 1997 she became one of President Mandela’s three private secretaries. In 2002 she left government and became a full-time employee of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

10:08AM – David Kukoff, Author of “Children of The Canyon”

www.davidkukoff.com

On May 9, the Grammy Museum opened California Dreamin’: The Sounds of Laurel Canyon, 1965-1977, an exhibition that includes handwritten lyrics by Frank Zappa, the writing chair of Jim Morrison of the Doors, and tons of candid photos of musicians in the canyon.

David Kukoff, a screenwriter (Switching GoalsModel Behavior) who grew up in West Hollywood during the era, has approached the microculture from a more literary perspective. His first novel, Children of the Canyon, was released in February  and tells the story of a boy, David, growing up in Laurel Canyon in the ’60s and ’70s. David’s dad is a music producer, his mom leaves to find peace in an ashram, and his first love is a girl named Topanga. Kukoff uses historical events to anchor the narrative but incorporates his experiences and memories.

The book opens with David’s parents dancing around a bonfire and tossing in their wedding rings in what David will learn is their divorce ceremony. His dad tries to raise him while helping a struggling musician who resembles Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. There are wild parties at the house. A Huey Newton stand-in hosts a Black Panther meeting in their living room. Onenight a knock at the door brings them news that a body has gone missing and is later found burnt in Joshua Tree à la Gram Parsons. And David finds himself worrying about the curious people he’s seen on the TV who call themselves the Manson family.

During his tenure with AARP, he has helped the organization grow from 36 million to 40 million boomer/senior members, and added over $200 million in new revenue. His specific responsibilities included all marketing, advertising, brand and positioning programs for AARP and AARP Services Inc. (ASI), the association’s for-profit arm. Among his many achievements, he helps make AARP the third most trusted brand in America.

Before joining AARP, he was senior vice president for Discovery Communications Inc., a leading television network. Among his many accomplishments was the development of several major national health and fitness initiatives and partnerships, including the first-ever televised awards show and gala “Medical Honors 2004,” which celebrated the achievements of our nation’s most eminent health care leaders, professionals and scientists. He was also responsible for creating dozens of public/private alliances with influential organizations such as U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Centers for Disease Control.

Prior to joining Discovery, he was CEO and a member of the board of CityNet Telecommunications Inc., a leading telecommunications network company and pioneer in building fiberoptic networks in U.S. and international cities.
