Craig Shoemaker10:30AM (PST) – Craig Shoemaker, Comedian, Actor, Writer

@thelovemaster
www.CraigShoemaker.com

He’s been on Broadway, performed standup comedy for four US Presidents, and guest starred with recurring acting roles on network TV, performed solo television specials, hosted/produced reality television, a WGA scribe of film and sitcoms, award-winning producer, a best selling author…but who IS Craig Shoemaker?

Craig began his showbiz career doubling as a bartender and comedy emcee, while putting himself through Temple University in his hometown of Philadelphia, before taking his talents to Tinsel Town in 1988. His first Hollywood break was playing the role (twice) as an entertainment reporter on ABC’s “Matlock”, where he worked alongside his childhood idols, Andy Griffith and Don Knotts. Craig then had the opportunity to guest star as a ghost boxer opposite fellow Philadelphian Will Smith in a special episode of “Fresh Prince of Bel Air”. This was only the beginning of what was followed by several successful TV stand-up specials and numerous co-starring roles in feature films and TV. Now “Dr. Shoe” even has a doctorate degree from Cal U of PA, and his new best selling book, “LoveMaster’d,” critically acclaimed by the likes of Whoopi Goldberg and Dr. Drew Pinsky, is helping people worldwide manage and transform through personal struggles.
Craig’s latest 90-minute standup special, “Daditude”, in which he also served as Executive Producer, aired prime time on SHOWTIME Network. His very first Comedy Central show was voted by viewers as one of the “Top 20″ specials of all time. His second, “Unzipped” aired to mass acclaim and the CD was Billboard Top 20 for six weeks. Summer 2015, he produced and starred in the #1 comedy album on I-Tunes, “The Last Stand (Up)”. Two stand-up bits made it to the all time Top 10 list on XM Radio. Countless standup TV appearances, including two on HBO’s prestigious “Comic Relief”, which he co hosted from New Orleans in 2008.

Voted Elevate Film Festival’s “Best Supporting Actor”, Craig’s film, TV and recording credits are extensive. He recurred as Wilson Gromling, head of the local Pawnee “Liberty or Die Party”, on NBC’s “Parks & Recreation” had a five episode role on “Bold & The Beautiful”, was the film professor inScream 2 and just wrapped co-starring as “Bandit” in the movie, “Middle Man”. A prolific mimic and voiceover artist, Craig’s dead-on impression of Don Knotts and narration was featured in the film “Pleasantville”, and he’s voiced characters in numerous animated series, including lead voices (and title song) for the new cartoon, “Big Foot, Little Foot”. Craig stars in Universal’s cult hit (Stony nominated), “Totally Baked”, which he also wrote and produced, along with producing the follow up Hulu hit, “420 Comedy Hour”. Currently he is producer/writer for a series of animated shorts, “From the Crib” and a feature documentary called “Laughter Heals!” He produced, wrote and starred in the Indy feature, “The LoveMaster”, which won the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. LHP produced reality pilots, “Straight Eye for the Whipped Guy” and “Chicken Fried Bride”, hosted by Craig as well. Hosting chops were honed on such shows as “Real Funny” on ABC and the game show “My Generation” on VH-1. “Shoe’s” LHP and Really Big Shoe Productions team have over ten shows in development at this time.
Craig’s comedy style has earned him numerous awards, including “Best Male Standup” at the American Comedy Awards on ABC. His work as actor/producer for PRISM, earned Shoemaker 2 NATAS Emmy Awards. Doctor Shoe is passionate about going beyond the comedy, officiating weddings of “HaHa-trimony”, as well as assisting people in mastering love & happiness. In 2003 he founded LaughterHeals.org, a nonprofit group dedicated to using laughter as a healing modality.
But credits, schmedits. Most importantly, Craig is happily married to his wife Mika and is father to three sons, Justin, Jared and Jackson and toddler daughter Chloe! Yes, the LoveMaster has mastered love and success, but a teen friend of his son sums up this performer’s career, when he nervously approached Craig and said, “Mr. Shoemaker, it is so cool you are verified on Twitter.” #Classic

Oscar special with Leonard Maltin finishes its run on Reelz this weekend

@GraeDrake

In 6th grade, when Rotten Tomatoes Senior Editor Grae Drake was arranging movie outings for all her friends, she picked the movie. Through the years studying film at the University of Texas at Austin, being honored by Sundance and the Director’s Guild of America, and working as a filmmaker in Los Angeles, she realized how terrible she was at keeping her opinions to herself. The Popcorn Mafia podcast was born, and led to her becoming CNN’s movie critic. She also has dished the dirt with stars on HLN’s Showbiz Tonight, Fox News, G4’s Attack of the Show, and is a regular at the TV Guide Network and the Reelz Channel. Her passionate thoughts can also be heard on terrestrial radio all over North America. And just to note, she still won’t let other people pick the movies.

A bartender turned Hollywood reporter/gossip guru, Rick joined the National Enquirer back in early 2000 by pure serendipity – being at the right place at the right time – but also for the mere fact that the very West Coast hipster-looking thespian has a unique certain je ne sais quoi that somehow makes him a people magnet – he’s everybody’s confidant.

Bob Barker10:30AM (PST) – Bob Barker, Animal Defenders International

Discussing his involvement with Animal Defenders International, and other animal issues he’s involved with
@AnimalDefenders
#BobBarker
www.ad-international.org

Now that Bob Barker has retired from CBS’ THE PRICE IS RIGHT after 35 years as the show’s host, he is devoting much of his time to the DJ&T Foundation which he formed in 1995 to help control the dog and cat population. He funds the foundation through his own resources to support low-cost or free spay/neuter clinics. According to Barker, over population is one of our most tragic animal problems. The foundation is named in memory of his wife Dorothy Jo and his mother Matilda (Tilly) Valandra, both of whom loved all animals. Since his retirement, Bob has been busy on a number of animal rights-related issues. He was instrumental in having a Spay-Neuter ordinance adopted by the City of Los Angeles and lobbied Chicago and the State of California to adopt similar laws, and is encouraging New York City to do likewise. He also supported the adoption of such ordinances by the cities of Dallas and San Antonio. He has written an autobiographical book titled “Priceless Memories” that landed on the New York Times bestseller list within the first two weeks of its distribution. He donated $5,000,000 the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to underwrite its cost of anti-whaling internationally. With Barker’s contribution, Sea Shepherd purchased a new ship which it named the Bob Barker that joins the society’s MV Steve Irwin in its direct actions campaigns to defend ocean wildlife worldwide. He has provided financial support for a number of other projects he’s undertaken since his retirement, including $3 million to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund towards construction of a $60 million treatment center for traumatic brain injuries suffered by military personnel. The center will be located in Bethesda, Maryland, adjacent to the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. As a former Navy fighter pilot, he is especially concerned with the care of injured veterans; $1 million to his alma mater, Drury University, to establish the Dorothy Jo Barker Professorship on animal rights that will lead to a full undergraduate degree program. He gave the school another $1 million to establish the Drury University Forum on Animal Rights, which includes an undergraduate course on animal ethics. These are the first such programs at an undergraduate school and they are reverberating throughout the educational system.

In June of 2001, the Harvard Law School established the Bob Barker Endowment for the Study of Animal Rights Law to support teaching and research in this emerging field. He has since established similar endowments at Stanford, Columbia, UCLA, Georgetown, Duke, University of Virginia and Northwestern University law schools. His work on behalf of animals has garnered him a long list of awards from prestigious humane organizations across the country. He is involved in ongoing efforts to rescue elephants from zoos in Los Angeles and Canada. He went to North Carolina to attempt the rescue of bears from local road side shows.
Bob has won a total of 19 Emmy awards — 14 as TV host, more than any other performer, four as Executive Producer of “The Price Is Right” and the Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award for Daytime Television in 1999. He was installed into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Hall of Fame in 2004. He has also received the coveted Carbon Mike Award of the Pioneer Broadcasters and was named the most popular game show host of all time in a national poll. On April 26, 2002, he broke Johnny Carson’s record for continuous performances on the same network television show. Johnny retired from THE TONIGHT SHOW after 29 years, seven months and 21 days (10/1/62 – 5/22/92).
In September, 2007, he was inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians. A bronze likeness of him was placed in the Missouri State Capitol Rotunda in Jefferson City along side those of past honorees: Walt Disney, George Washington Carver, Harry Truman, Ginger Rodgers, Josephine Baker, former US Attorney General John Ashcroft and famed St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck.

Bob was born in Darrington, WA, and spent most of his youth on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota where his mother was a schoolteacher. His family eventually moved to Springfield, MO, where he attended high school and Drury College on a basketball scholarship. When World War II intervened, he became a Navy fighter pilot, but the war ended before he was assigned to a seagoing squadron. Following his discharge, Bob returned to Drury and took a job at a local radio station to help finance his studies. It was there that he discovered that what he did best was to host audience participation shows. After graduating summa cum laude with a degree in economics, he went to work for a radio station in Palm Beach, FL. A year later he moved to Los Angeles, and within a month, he was the host of his own radio program, “The Bob Barker Show”.
Bob made his debut on national television as the host of the popular TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES. Ralph Edwards, the show’s originator, had sold the show to NBC as a daytime strip, but he had not chosen a host. He auditioned emcees in Hollywood and New York for weeks, but when he heard “The Bob Barker Show” on his car radio he knew he had found the man for the job.
Bob is one of the most visible figures in the animal rights movement and one of its most eloquent speakers beginning with the “Fur Flap” surrounding the 1987 Miss USA Pageant which attracted more media attention than any single event in animal rights history. If the swimsuit contestants wore real furs, as planned by the pageant producers, Barker said that it would be impossible for him to participate in the telecast. He prevailed, and synthetic furs were substituted for the real thing. In 1988, Bob was again the subject of media attention coast to coast when, after hosting the Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants for 21 years, he resigned because the producers refused to remove fur coats from the prize packages. As an interesting sidelight, the first telecast of the Miss USA Pageant without Barker as host resulted in a decline in rating of 29%, an incredible loss for a special that airs from one year to the next. Barker also resigned as host of “The Patsy Awards” when he learned that trainers frequently use cruel methods to force animals to perform in movies.
A man of conviction who fights animal exploitation in all of its grisly forms, he has refused offers to do commercials for sponsors because of the animal cruelty involved in the development and manufacture of their products. He turned down a lucrative offer to use his name and likeness in print advertising by one of the nation’s best known hospitals because the institution was conducting animal experiments. He also spearheaded the investigation of the movie PROJECT X that led to a request by the Los Angeles Department of Animal Regulation that criminal charges be filed for animal cruelty during the production of the picture.

Snowball in a Blizzard

In his new book, SNOWBALL IN A BLIZZARD: A Physician’s Notes on Uncertainty in Medicine (Basic Books; February 23, 2016), Dr. Steven Hatch provides a sense of the challenges that can be found in all areas of the modern medical practice. The premise is simple: doctors do not often “know” what they are doing with the same kind of mathematical precision that we associate with rocket scientists or chemical engineers. There is far more haziness in the world of medicine than most people—those both outside and inside that world—understand. Only by stripping away the layers of misunderstanding about what medicine is and how it works, says Dr. Hatch, can patients and families begin to be their own best advocates and doctors can provide better care.

Steven Hatch is an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, working in the Division of Infectious Disease and Immunology. He lives in Newton, Massachusetts.

Nia Sanchez10:30AM (PST) – Nia Sanchez, Miss USA 2014

Nia is a Co-Founder of “Universal Confidence” – a series of workshops that help girls overcome self-esteem issues. She created this new program with her friend and fellow pageant member, Tegan Martin. Email NiaAndTegan@gmail.com for more information
@RealNiaSanchez
#UniversalConfidence

Nia Temple Sanchez was named Miss USA 2014 and became the first titleholder representing Nevada to bring home the crown. Last January, Nia competed against 87 other women from across the globe during the 63rd Annual Miss Universe Pageant and placed first runner-up representing the USA.

Born in California and now residing in Los Angeles, Nia loves the thrill of traveling and has lived all over the world. After capturing the Miss USA crown, Nia relocated to New York City for the first time in her life where she lived during her reign. Raised in the small town of Menifee, California, Nia proved that beauty queens break stereotypes – and boards – when the world discovered she holds a fourth degree black belt in Taekwondo.
Coming from a Mexican/German background and quite the avid traveler, Nia has already added both countries to the list of places she has either worked, visited or lived. During high school, Nia traveled to Mexico on three different occasions to carry out mission trips with her church. Following those works she headed to Germany where she worked as a nanny. Not someone to stay in one place for too long, Nia jumped at the opportunity to experience Abu Dhabi during an extended stay with the family she was working with. Additionally, the beauty has even held a position with a well-known theme park which brought her to live in Hong Kong, a city which she fell in love with and now compares to New York City.
Nia’s parents divorced when she was seven years old resulting in a financially vulnerable situation for her mother. The decision was made to bring Nia and her younger brother to live in a women’s shelter for several months during the transition. Nia’s mother was able to build her resume, confidence and the skills needed to return to the workforce and live comfortably on her own. Soon after, Nia went to live with her father where she was enrolled in a new grade school. This unfamiliar environment didn’t help socially as she was quickly labeled as the shy student in class. Nia would later go on to compete for national titles in the U.S. and eventually become a Taekwondo instructor herself. Her family’s studio is still owned and operated by her father in Southern California. Shortly after winning Miss Nevada USA, Nia began to volunteer at a women’s shelter in Las Vegas. Although her own experience living in one was not due to domestic violence, many of the women there had gone through difficult situations of their own and Nia immediately felt a personal connection to them. With her background in martial arts, Nia began to realize how important it is for women to know self-defense and used her own knowledge to teach them what she is so passionate about. As Miss USA, Nia spent her reign empowering women to learn self-defense in order to prevent and avoid harmful situations in which she titles these lessons, “Stranger Danger”. Making regular school visits in the New York area, Nia teaches self-defense to students of all ages and encourages them to be self-confident in everything they do. Nia has shared escape techniques on national news programs including Live with Kelly and Michael and Fox and Friends, among others.

Aside from traveling, Nia likes being outdoors and taking part in any sporting activity that nature provides. She especially enjoys hiking – something she does often with her mother when she visits her in Washington State. Currently in search of the perfect book club, Nia loves to read and is never able to put a good book down once she starts. During her reign, Nia will be a spokesperson for breast and ovarian cancer education, prevention and awareness and works closely with organizations such as Gilda’s Club, Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, Project Sunshine, and Best Buddies, among others.

Pet Talk” – Premiering Friday, Feb. 19 at 10/9c on Nat Geo WILD
@natgeowild
#PETTALK

Dr. Tina Olivieri has had a special place in her heart for animals ever since childhood. Growing up in St. Petersburg, Florida, her family never had a shortage of animals. Whether it was cats, dogs, pigs, iguanas, guinea pigs, gerbils, sugar gliders, parakeets, cockatoos, rabbits, mice, turtles, or chickens, she has loved them all. It was no surprise that she graduated with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Oklahoma State University in 2009.
After graduation, Dr. Tina did an Internship in Reproduction at OSU, and she was the first intern at Oklahoma State University to complete and publish a Master’s Degree in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences in just one year. Studying the reproductive aspect of veterinary medicine gave her a great respect for the gift of life. Being able to hand deliver calves, kids, foals, and puppies, she was able to gain a great appreciation for the life cycle of animals. She learned early on that it’s an absolute honor to bring an animal into the world. Once her internship was completed, Dr. Tina moved on to small animal private practice, relief medicine, and wellness clinics in both Oklahoma and Southern California. Currently she practices wellness medicine and has her own in-home hospice care practice for families of Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Tina continues to study predominantly small animals, but she is always able to help her parents in Oklahoma with their horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, myriad of waterfowl, cats and dogs. No animal is off limits for her!

Throughout life, Dr. Tina has known all kinds of animals, both old and new, but one thing that she has grown to understand and respect above all, is the human-animal bond. She has always believed that there is no greater unconditional love or everlasting friendship than that which we share with our pets. And it is this understanding of the human-animal bond that has brought Dr. Tina to “Pet Talk”.
She wants to welcome all pet owners to learn, laugh, and ask questions!! To Dr. Tina, all pet parents are her family, and she considers it her goal in life to help each and every one.

The Balanced Relationship Barometer

Relationship Barometer, and its companion book, The Balanced Relationship Barometer, are the breakthrough of Michael’s quest to help his 7-year-old daughter avoid the pain of divorce and the toll it took on his family. His divorce set him on a path of self-reflection, research and observation that became the basis of this fulfilling project.

Michael Gabriel‘s career as a successful media and technology executive (he was a founding executive of the industry-transforming HBO GO project) provided him with broad experience in innovation, problem avoidance and problem solving. When he had to face something he dreaded, explaining to his beloved 7-year-old daughter why Daddy was moving out of the house, how could he simplify it, and make it comprehensible even to a child? In trying to understand what happened with his marriage, and whether the problems could have been foreseen and avoided, Michael began to formulate the insights, tools, and framework that culminated in his book, The Balanced Relationship Barometer. It’s all about knowing yourself, and what will truly make you fulfilled in your relationship, based on building awareness and seeing trends of your needs and experiences. This approach has been validated by hundreds of people in different stages of healthy as well as unfulfilling relationships, and led him to support the book by developing a simple mobile app, Relationship Barometer.

Michael truly believes that this book and mobile app could help others avoid what happened to his family, and in having fewer children hear the words that he had to speak to his daughter.

The Warmup Guy
Bob Perlow “The Warm-Up Guy” on Facebook

Bob Perlow is a 35-year-veteran of the Hollywood scene. He is a writer/actor/warm-up comic who creates, produces, writes and stars in taped performances.
Known as Hollywood’s Go-To Audience Warmup person for decades, he worked on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno for 15 years in addition to some of television’s most iconic sitcoms including “Friends”, “Growing Pains”, “Cheers”, “Will and Grace”, “Two and a Half Men”, “Newhart”, “Who’s The Boss”, “Taxi” and “Full House”.

Not only is Perlow an author of a new show business memoir, THE WARMUP GUY (Pelican Publishing Company/February 15, 2016) in which he serves up backstage dish on some of tv’s biggest sitcoms, he is also the star of a one-man show entitled “Tales from Hollywood” in which he interacts with his audience as he takes them on a journey through the backstages of Hollywood and reveals what it was really like on the sets of many legendary sitcoms. It’s the rare performer who can legitimately claim to have created an entirely new entertainment category. But Bob Perlow did and can.
There’s more to warming up a TV studio audience than an initial pre-show rah-rah cheerleader session to get the folks in the bleachers revved up. That was the way it once worked, but Bob Perlowchanged that forever when, for a whopping $50 a week, he agreed to warm up the audience for tapings of “Laverne and Shirley”. Instead of cracking a few jokes to set the tone, with his own money he bought a supply of audience giveaway t-shirts, and performed what amounted to a stand-up comedy act every time there was a scene break, a re-shoot, or anything else that caused taping to stop during a three-, five- or eight-hour taping.
Perlow was also the creator, co-producer and star of Nick at Night’s “Let Bob Do It” with Jason Alexander which followed him as he took the place of ordinary people who wanted a “time out” from their responsibilities. In addition, he also received writing credits on a number of sit-coms including “Laverne & Shirley”, “Who’s The Boss”, “Webster”, “Night Court” and “Head Over Heals”. He was also a featured player on NBC’s “Candid Camera” with host Dom DeLouise.

A native of Rhode Island, Perlow received his bachelor of science and master of business degrees from the University of Rhode Island. He lives in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

In her new book, Angela – who previously published the beautiful spiritual memoir “The Circle of Love,” based on her relationship with her late mother — imparts the fruits of her hard-won wisdom in a spirited, highly conversational way. She likes to imagine her relationship with the reader as if they were out to lunch together and she’s sharing everything her companion needs to know about the industry so that a person can make educated decisions – and indeed, decide whether it’s worth having their children pursue a career in the crazy world of entertainment at all.
Without revealing too much up front, Angela is excited to whet people’s whistle for the book by explaining that it’s a 12 chapter work (plus a preface/mission statement detailing her unique qualifications to write it) that includes chapters with titles like “The Cold Open”, “The Price” (i.e. If your child becomes successful, have you considered the price that goes along with it), “What Type of Parent Are You?” and the very revealing “20 Ways to Avoid A Mess” (including how to defuse situations and handling disrespectful behavior on set and in public).

The Displaced Debutante is a blog inspired by successes, struggles, and snapshot moments from the life of a 20-something single girl in New York City trying to balance the “Southern Belle” she was taught to be and the “Modern Woman” she feels compelled to become, all in the face of online dating, the hipster movement, and a serious frozen yogurt addiction.
