Jenny Nordberg9:39AM (PST) – Jenny Nordberg, award-winning journalist and now author of “The Underground Girls of Kabul”

What’s the difference between men and women? In Afghanistan, it’s freedom. In their deeply conservative, gender-segregated society, males live fully, while females live a life defined by oppression. From the moment she is born, an Afghan girl has little value, very few rights and almost no control over her own life. She must guard her behavior, appear modest at all times, and often cannot leave the house without an escort. It is no wonder, then, that international aid organizations have called Afghanistan the worst and most dangerous country in the world in which to be a born a girl. The woman you are about to meet has uncovered the “underground girls of kabul” and is here to tell us their harrowing story.

Jenny Nordberg is an award-winning journalist based in New York with a long record of investigative reports for, among others, the New York Times, where she contributed to a series that won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. She has reported extensively from Europe and the Middle East, and in 2010, she was awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Excellence in Journalism for a television documentary on Afghan women.
