5:15am PT – Stephanie Fryslie, Founder of Nicora Johns, the 1st American manufacturer of quality, handmade, eco friendly and cruelty-free shoes with a focus of bringing jobs back to the USA.
Stephanie Fryslie, founder of eco footwear brand Nicora Johns, is on a mission: to breathe new life into the US shoe industry. Not one-step at a time, but by leaps and bounds.
The global shoe industry is a multi-billion dollar business, and most shoes (and their materials) purchased in America come from developing nations. 99% to be precise. This scenario is a recipe for disaster: it’s an environmental catastrophe–due to lax environmental regulations–a critical human health risk (environment again) and, most obviously, a needless decimation of animal life. To say nothing of the egregious (read: nearly nonexistent) labor laws in many of the foreign countries where shoes we wear are made.
According to Fryslie, who operates out of LA, “greening up” this industry has potential to clean up planet earth on a global scale, and that’s not an exaggeration. “The resources being exhausted to make shoes are both absurd and unnecessary. It doesn’t have to be that way at all,” the 32-year-old entrepreneur says.
Coming from the manufacturing–rather than the fashion–side, Fryslie plans to rebuild the shoemaking infrastructure in the United States using entirely eco methods. Partnered with a team of US shoe veterans and backed by 10 years of finance and operations management experience, Fryslie has been able to launch Nicora Johns via Kickstarter, and the response has been encouraging. It looks like consumers are ready to support ethical fashion!
Fryslie is also an advocate of food medicine, having cured herself of a rare autoimmune disease through diet: she is meat-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free and sugar-free–and feeling fabulous!
