Emily - THM Success Story
Thank you, Marilu! I picked up your green book a couple years ago at a bookstore and leafed through it. I bought it because it didn’t seem like a fad diet and you were brave enough to show less than flattering pictures of yourself, even though you’re a gorgeous, famous celebrity. I thought to myself, “She was never really fat, just needed to get healthy and lose a few pounds, just like me!” I thought, hmm, I can do that!
I tried it for a while and had a hard time sticking to it. Giving up meat, sugar, chemicals, etc. was easy, but dairy was too hard the first time without any support. I then tried macrobiotics and that was too hard, too. Then, the breakthrough – your April 2003 online class. I had gotten to my absolute fattest ever. I was literally busting out of my size 10s (I should’ve been wearing 12s). I am 5’7” and had gotten up to 168 lbs. I couldn’t stand it anymore. I thought, well, I’ll commit to it for 3 weeks. I can do anything for 3 weeks. I told my husband that if he wanted me to be thin and healthy, he needed to be on board and eat the healthy food that I cooked. If he wanted me to get fatter, we could keep eating tomato vodka pasta (with cream), cheese and other “regular”, less than healthy foods. I loved cheese (especially brie and gorgonzola!) and it was going to be very difficult to stop eating it entirely. He was very supportive of the change. So, I cleared out my cupboards, getting rid of 4 bags of non-THM food. I went to my local Wild Oats and bought all kinds of healthy foods – most of which I already knew about from my time eating the macrobiotic way. Chatting with Marilu every day for 3 weeks kept me on track. I visited the message boards for extra tips almost daily as well.
Since the end of the April class, I have continued on the THM path. I have read more great books and gone to lectures. Thanks to rinnyroo (I think it was you) for suggesting some great websites, especially www.madcowboy.com and www.vegsource.com. They got me on the path toward becoming a vegan. The VegSource website has a link to John Robbins’ website. I’ve read one of his books, The Food Revolution. It has changed my life just as Marilu’s books have. I also recommend www.drfuhrman.com and www.pcrm.org.
Marilu’s program is the anti-Atkins. It’s great because it’s not just about weight-loss, it’s about heath. Ask anyone who knows me how I went from a size 12 to a size 4 and they’ll say, “Marilu, being vegan and no more cheese!”
