Get moving * Enjoy the day

Something about summertime gives us happy feet. As in, dancing feet, not penguin feet.

Get moving outside today.

  • If that means walking to the bus or subway station with purpose and good posture, then do that. In fact, try walking to the next stop for a little extra exercise.
  • If that means taking laps around your office parking lot at noon, then do that. Pack your sneakers and a pair of good socks.
  • If that means putting your kids in a wagon or on their bikes or in a stroller and walking around the neighborhood, then do that.
  • If that means rollerblading or skateboarding or bicycling in your neighborhood (with or without kids), then do that.
  • If that means gardening and weeding and yardwork, then do that.
  • If that means basketball or jump rope or tag (with or without kids), then do that.
  • If that means a long walk with your dog after dinner, then do that.
  • If that means dancing under the stars with your sweetie, then do that.

Stand up!

If you surround yourself with negative people
You’ll never feel settled in or become equal – no.
They’ll suppress you of your spirit and rinse you dry of smiles.
So reach deep and release your inner child. Yeah Yeah!

So Stand Up! For the Love, Love, Love
So Stand Up! For the Love, Love, Love
So Stand Up! For the Love, Love, Love
So Stand Up! For the Love, Love

Cuz’ you’re as old as you feel you are
And if you don’t reach for the moon you can’t fall on the stars
So I live my life like every day is the last, last, last
Stand up
(Repeat)

If you let a frown become your normality
You don’t set an example for the youth of our humanity
If you spend everyday wishing for the next to come
Aged and lifeless is what (Yes!) you’ll become. Yeah Yeah!

So Stand Up! For the Love, Love, Love
So Stand Up! For the Love, Love, Love
So Stand Up! For the Love, Love, Love
So Stand Up! For the Love, Love

Cuz’ you’re as old as you feel you are
And if you don’t reach for the moon you can’t fall on the stars
So I live my life like every day is the last, last, last

Stand up.
Stand up for yourself and for your life.
Stand up and get moving.

S-t-r-e-t-c-h

People who regularly break up their sedentary time with movement as small as taking one step had healthier waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), and triglycerides than people who didn’t take breaks during long periods of sitting. That’s what Australian researchers found in a 2008 study.

But how to make a habit out of taking breaks? Toni Yancey’s Instant Recess book offers the following suggestions for people who feel chained to their office desks:

  • Take a 10-minute activity break at a scheduled time every day.
  • Park farther away from the places where you work, shop, play, study and worship.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Put printers a short walking distance away from your work or study space instead of right next to it.
  • Replace desk chairs with stability balls — or use a standing desk to get rid of the chair entirely — to burn more calories while working.
  • Fidget, stand up and stretch at intervals during meetings.

No excuses. Get up and s-t-r-e-t-c-h right now.

Put on a smile and get moving

Spring just seems so … violent this year. So many storms, so much action, so little time to be outside and enjoy the day.

Well, my umbrella’s tired of the weather wearing me down!

So put on a smile – you should look as good as your outlook; you’ve got a paradise inside – and get moving.

Let your endorphins bring on the sunshine in your day. Create the attitude you want to enjoy and project, and then share it.

What’s on your price tag?

It’s not about the money, money, money…
It’s not about the cha-ching, cha-ching…
It’s not about the ba-bling, ba-bling…

We just wanna make the world dance
Forget about the price tag.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all just dance together and let all the things that divide us fall away? We need to remember that the important thing is not whether we’re wearing the “right” shoes or the “coolest” sunglasses.

Don’t sell out to somebody else’s idea of who you should be. Your price tag? Should read “PRICELESS.”

Now get up and celebrate YOU with some dancing.

Are you looking for more money, honey?

We could all use more Money, Honey, but the smartest thing to do is use what we have brilliantly. That’s how we stay fiscally fit and fabulous – being smart with our m-o-n-e-y (so sexy!), and remembering that people (especially the people we love) are more important than things.

What do your spending habits say about your priorities?
Do you spend all your money on “treats” and have little or nothing left for necessities?
Do you budget for fitness and physical activities, like a bicycle or a gym membership or new athletic shoes?
Do you look for the free or inexpensive things you can do to enjoy your city?
How do you show the people you love that they’re more important than anything you buy?

Now grab the ones you love and get up and move! (It’s free!)

Let’s get moving!

Some days we’re just itching to move.

Maybe it’s the warmer weather; maybe it’s the fact that we love our fitness classes and miss them on our days off; maybe it’s just the way some days pile it on and we need to let.it.all.out. (Ever have those days? Yeah. We do, too.)

So here’s an epic (and gloriously long) song from Meatloaf (who, coincidentally, had one of those days on Celebrity Apprentice last week). Dare you to dance the whole thing. Don’t panic; it’s almost written for an interval workout!

Now get moving. Like a bat out of hell!

Fitness Friday * Foolin’ around

This one is for consenting adults…

It’s Friday. Get your groove on! Yes, we count sex as exercise (as long as it’s active). Start with some partner dancing, and let it take you further. Make it romantic and fun.

Twist your way to a new waist

Work your obliques! Obliques are part of your abdominal core, so making them strong helps with your total core strength. They also make your waist look smaller when they’re toned.

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet on the floor. Rest your head in your hands, but keep your shoulders back and relaxed (like you’re going to do a sit-up).
  2. Raise just one shoulder blade up while pressing the other to the floor. As you raise up, twist to move your elbow in the direction of your opposite knee, squeezing from your abs and waist. Press your back firmly to the floor throughout the movement — don’t let it arch.
  3. Slowly lower your shoulder blade to the floor and repeat.
  4. Do two sets of eight to 12 repetitions per side.
  5. Look hot in your bathing suit!

Of course, you can firm up those obliques with dance, too. Remember The Twist? (Maybe not, but you can still do it!)
